DRAINING OF LAND
ESSENTIAL TO SUCCESS It is often said that the cost of draining farm land is prohibitive in many cases and for this reason it is left undone to the great detriment of the land. Those who deny the value of draining must fail to realise the very great difference which good drainage makes in not only the return from the land, but also the cost of working it. Not only is the labour involved much lessened by a better mechanical condition, but also the farmer is able to spend more time on other parts of the farm. Farmers using artificial fertilisers know how these are wasted by washing and leaching, and a little acquaintance with soil science shows how, directly and practically, warmth, early germination, nutrification, and other very important c<mditions of fertility are improved by drainage. Healthier livestock, too, is an asset which few thoughtful men will overlook. If land is not adequately drained, then the fertilising of it will not bring the best results and the farmer is throwing away money by putting fertiliser on land that cannot wholly benefit from it.
