“The Mikado” on the Screen The film of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera, “The Mikado,” has been secured by Greater Union Theatres for exhibition in Sydney at the Victory Theatre. In making this announcement, Mr Norman B. Rydge, chairman of directors of Greater Union, stated that “The Mikado” is generally considered to be one of the screen's outstanding achievements. For years, the d’Oyley Carte company had steadfastly refused producers permission to film the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Now, following the remarkable success of “The Mikado.” it is understood that other operas will be brought to the screen, starting with "The Yeomen of the Guard.” “The Mikado,” an all-tcchnicolour production, was made by Gaumont-British-Dominion Films. John Barclay and Gregory Stroud, both of whom have toured New Zealand with Gilbert and Sullivan companies arc prominent in the cast. Herbert Marshall on New York Stage Herbert Marshall, the film star, is to star in New York in Hie new comedy, “Ladies and Gentlemen.” which Gilbert. Miller is to present and produce on Broadway. Suggested by a play of Ladislaus Bus-Feketc, the Hungarian playwright, it is now' set in Los Angeles.
