RUSSIAN BALLET

BEAUTIFUL FROOKING CLEVER BLENDING OF COLOURS The costuming in the programme presented last night at the Theatre Royal by the Covent Garden Russian Ballet, was extremely lovely in its strikinij simplicity. Gorgeous colours were cleverly blended to create exotic effects in “Les Presages.” In “Carnaval” Tatiana Riabouchinska wore a hooped frock of ivory satin, the long swaying skirt being fashioned with tier upon tier of pe tailed frills, which were embroidered in delicate shades of pink and blue. The decollete neckline of the tiny tight bodice was outlined with a narrow frill and she wore scarlet flowers in her blonde hair. Tamara Grigorieva’s costume was a dainty creation of white georgette, the skirt being designed in two wide frills with a centre panel of tiny frills and attached to a pointed bodice. Bright blue flowers in rings adorned the

skirt and the waistline was defined by a narrow blue velvet ribbon.

The costume worn by Irina Baronova in ‘‘Le Lac des Cygnes” was exceptionally beautiful. The tiny ballet skirt was composed almost entirely of ostrich feathers and the sq-uare neckline of the satin bodice was finished with ostrich feather trimming, and she wore a sp ar kh n o coronet, which threw out iridescent lights as she danced. The “swans” looked juite exquisite in their traditional oallet frocks of tiny bodices and long full tulle skirts.

The most colourful ballet was “Les Presages,” in which Tamara Tchina•ova wore a long frock of heavy dullurfaced material in an unusual grey hade tinged with pink, and slashed n futuristic design with soft rose .civet. The skirt was pleated and .vrapped around the figure, which i rave it a slightly Grecian effect. Irina Baronova in this ballet wore in unusual and striking costume of lame, designed on tunic lines and worn over flesh pink tights, and her headdress was a halo of flame ostrich Ups. Tatiana Riabouchinska wore a limilar costume, the colour of the ights being sea green and her tunic powder blue. On her head she wore a cap composed of sea green plumes attached to a cap of satin nid pearls.
