Shipping Dividend The directors of Huddart-Parker, Limited, shipowners, Melbourne, announce that, subject to audit, final dividends of 3 per cent, on preference shares and 6 per cent, on ordinary shares will be paid for the half-year ended December 31. In addition, a bonus of 2 per cent, will be paid on ordinary shares. Taste in Houses That the majority of the homes of New Zealanders showed lack of artistic appreciation in their design was stated by Mr Cecil W. Wood, president of the New Zealand Institute of Architests, during an address at the annual conference at Dunedin. He said the natural beauties of the country had not been taken advantage of and it was the task of the institute as a body to endeavour to improve the standard of taste of the man in the street. This could first be done by the correct education of children while they were still at school. Justices’ Duties A statement that Justices of the peace in Rotorua appeared to be sidestepping their duties in declining to hear cases against motorists charged with intoxication was made by a solicitor, Mr E. Roe, in the Rotorua Magistrate’s Court yesterday. When the justices, after conferring, declined to alter their decision, Mr Roe intimated that, in conjunction with other members of the Bar, he would draft a letter to the Minister on the subject. Motor-cycle Safety The opinion that young people applying for a license to ride a motorcycle should be forced to join some organisation, which would train them in the careful use of the machines, was expressed by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, in addressing members of the Auckland Road Safety Committee yesterday. Mr Semple said he was satisfied that more had to be done to reduce the number of fatal accidents. While he had no spe - cial restrictions for motor-cyclists in mind, the committee would have an opportunity of discussing the matter with him before anything drastic was contemplated.
