HAMILTON ■JA GUIDE TO THE FEEDING OF CHILDREN In order that children may enjoy radiant health and happiness and make good physical and mental progress, they must have sufficient sleep (1 1-12 hours each night), fresh air and exercise, together with the correct diet. Marmite. Codliver Oil during the winter months, which helps to prevent dental decay and makes the child less susceptible to colds. WHAT 1. EVERY GROWING CHILD NEEDS: Milk: At least 1 pint of milk daily. Meat or Fish : Once daily. One egg three times a week. Cheese occasionally. Crisp bacon occasionally. Liver once Fruit C and y Vegetables: At least one vegetable (and preferably two) besides potato, which is best cooked in its jacket, always one green vegetable. Lettuce and tomatoes should be given liberally. An apple, orange or raw carrot once daily. , Wholemeal Bread: (Instead of white bread) liberally buttered. Breakfast Dish of porridge, cornflakes or rice bubbles, etc with plenty of milk, followed by crisp toast or bread and butter and marmalade and either bacon or egg for the older child. 8. Water. Give plenty of water or fruit juice to drink. Regularity of meals is important, and children must be encouraged to eat their meals slowly to aid digestion. THE SCHOOL LUNCH: Do parents realise that many children throw at least half of their lunch into the rubbish bin? The school lunch should be both interesting and appetising, besides being wholesome hence the following suggestions: In the winter time everyone enjoys a hot drink at lunch time, and now that thermos flasks are so cheap, it is a simple matter to provide the child with a flask of vegetable soup, cocoa, or hot milk to take with his lunch. In the summer time a bottle of milk or fruit juice is recommended. SUGGESTIONS FOR SCHOOL LUNCHES: Marmite and lettuce sandwiches Date sandwiches 2 Peanut biscuits Apple. Cheese and celery sandwiches Peanut butter sandwiches 2 Slices wholemeal raisin bread 5-6 Dates Apple or Carrot 7. 4 Pieces thin crisp oven dried bread 4 Slices of wholemeal bread (buttered) Hard boiled egg 3-4 Lettuce leaves 1 Cornflake cake Small handful of raisins Apple Rabbit sandwiches 2 Home-made rusks (buttered) Honey sandwiches 5-6 Prunes Orange 4 Slices wholemeal bread (buttered) Tomato and 3-4 lettuce leaves (pkt. salt) 2 Buttered bran biscuits 1 Queen cake Apple or carrot Egg and parsley or cress sandwiches Peanut butter sandwiches 2 Slices of raisin bread Orange spread with butter and marmite 3-4 Pieces celery 2 Date sandwiches 2 Pieces bran shortbread Apple Marmite and nut sandwiches Cheese and lettuce sandwiches 2 Anzac biscuits 5-6 Dates or prunes Orange or carrot Always use wholemeal bread for Always include an orange, apple lunch. the Children s sandwiches, or raw carrot with the Child’s ,v.v.^%v.v;v.v
