DOCTOR’S RESIDENCE

WAIKATO HOSPITAL LOAN CAMBRIDGE COUNCIL DISAPPROVES (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE. Thursday At the meeting of the Borough Council last evening the Waikato Hospital Board wrote requesting formal approval for the raising of a loan of £12.000. Details showed that £3500 was for the erection of a new doctor’s residence, and the council decided to protest at this expenditure, it being considered that £2500 was ample for this work. The Cambridge Carriers’ Association wrote regarding previous correspondence in connection with a request that the intersection of Williamson Street with Duke Street he formed at a more convenient angle with the approach to the new Duke Street bridge. The engineer. Mr W. McK. Jeffrey, stated that he had met representatives of the association and had pointed out the difficulties of the suggested roadway. Mr K. L. Wilkinson pointed out that when the matter was under consideration last year, advice was received from public works engineers who agreed that the council's original plan was the only feasible one. It was stated that the cost of the association’s scheme would be prohibitive and the result unsatisfactory. It was decided to reply assuring the Carriers’ Association that the original scheme would prove satisfactory for heavy traffic vehicles. Street Widening To enable the widening of Duke Street to proceed without delay, notice has been given to several propertyowners to remove- the verandahs from the fronts of their buildings. They are Messrs Thames Fisheries, Limited, Mr W. McVeagh and Mrs Gascoigne. As a measure of compensation each building affected is to be repainted. Messrs Blair and Company. Limited, are to be notified to set back their two benzine pumps.
