NATIONAL TITLES HANAN AND HATCHWELL QUALIFY FOR 220YDS. RACE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) IX YE RC AR GIL L, Thursday The second day of the national swimming championships opened with flie men's 220yds. heats this morning, the winners being Hanan Auckland and Hatchwcll Wellington in slow times, tiie competitors being content to qualify for the final to-night, which should be a (great race between Hatchwell and lianan. Crump is among the placed competitors m the i 00yds. with odds on lie 10-year-old Wellington champion, who is a stylist of sprinters and swam such a great race to win the 100yds. in his first appearance at a senior national meeting. Crump did not appear to be swimming at his best in the. heat this morning and indications point to a fight for the title between the holder, Hanan, and his conqueror in the 100yds. There were no 880yds. heats. Owing to the withdrawal of Pascoe ana Mathieson the final to-night will be contested by Johnson southland . Kidd Otago., Stokes (Canterbury;, the winner of the mile on' Tuesday night, Xe.well ,. the holder, Frank Nelson and Shanahan South Canterbury . Results:— 220yrjs. championship: First heat.
