“PUBLIC ENEMY NO. I”
TAXI-DRIVERS VICTIMISED TWO YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) 'CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Alleged to have victimised four taxidrivers to a total extent of £1 17s, Edward Dardanelle De Malmanche appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. He pleaded guilty.
Detective-Sergeant Sinclair said that De Malmanche liad hired taxis, giving false names and addresses.
“Among taxi-drivers,” said Mr Sinclair, “he is in American parlance Public Enemy No. 1.” De Malmanche was sentenced to. six months’ imprisonment with hard labour to be followed by 18 months’ reformative detention.
