OUTBREAK NEAR TAUPO FIRE THREATENS FOREST (Special to Times) TAUPO, Wednesday After it had apparently been brought well under control, the fire which threatened the Terraces Hotel on Monday, took a fresh lease of life yesterday, and caused considerable anxiety. * Efforts to quell the outbreak were continued throughout the day, but the fire was still burning a few' miles from forestry plantations late last ni*ht. firebreaks were dug and cut by fibout 50 men from the State forestry ramps and the Public Works Department in an efTort to confine the fire !o one area, and water was also carted in tanks on lorries to put out n number of small outbreaks. At about midday the work appeared to be successful. but, fanned by a strong southerly wind, the fire was soon blazing fiercely again and was making its way rapidly toward Tauhara Mountain. It was considered that further danger would be avoided if the fire ascended the Tauhara Mountain and burned Itself out in the thin scrub on the upper slopes.
