MORRINSVILLE BOROUGH
HIGHER CHARGES FOR WATER? COUNCIL TO MAKE INVESTIGATION CSpeoial to Times) MORRINSVILLE, Tuesday The Morrinsville Borough Council decided last evening to hold a special meeting shortly to discuss water charges. The Mayor, Mr W. Hetherington, expressed the opinion that the time had come to review the charges which have been operating for many years. The daily consumption of water had been estimated at 350,000 gallons, which he thought showed that water was being wasted by some householders. He thought that people using hoses or having troughs for stock should not object to paying a small charge in addition to the water rate of id in the £ on the unimproved value of sections. Mr B. Chapman, who was a member of the council when the water loan was raised, questioned whether the council had power to make alterations in the charges for water. Widening of Hamilton Road As a result of the widening of Hamilton road by five feet during the past year the council has to tar-seal portion of the road as well as the new footpath for half a mile. Most of the preliminary work lias already been carried out by the borough staff. . The council accepted quotations from W. S. Goosman and Company, Ltd., to complete the tar-sealing. The quotations have been submitted to the Main Highways Board for approval. When this is obtained the work will be put in hand as soon .as possible. Free Library Popular The town clerk reported that the free public library is increasing in popularity with the reading public. There are now 426 borrowers, including 100 borough ratepayers, 81 members of ratepayers’ families, 176 residents of the borough who are not ratepayers, and 60 country subscribers. This is a great increase on ihe 120 subscribers to Ihe library prior to it being made a “free” library j last year. The extra cost to the i council for ihe new system is £35 a year.
