PORKERS EASIER
MARKET AT FRANKTON BETTER BEEF FORWARD QUIET SHEEP SALE The lightest supply of beef seen at the yards this year came forward at the Frankton sale yesterday. A feature of the penning of fat oattle was the distinct improvement In quality, this factor having a favourable Influence on competition. Another quiet sale was experienced for fat sheep, while the recent drop In the schedule for pigs was reflected in the slacker demand for porkers. The fat steers available were the best seen for some weeks. Although it opened quietly, the market soon brightened, top sorts selling from £l2 10s to £l3 11s with a top quotation of £l4. The latter figure, which is the best obtained at the yards for some weeks, was given for three heavy Polled Angus steers. Although prices per head were better than last week, this could he attributed mainly to the better quality and the market on the whole could be quoted very firm. From 30s 6d to 35s per 1001 b was paid for the best ox, but in some cases the latter figure was slightly exceeded. Quality was also noticeably better in the cow and heifer beef section, although plain quality pens were not absent. The market in this department was also very firm with top prices showing an advance. Best lines were auctioned from £8 to £9 2s with £5 to £6 10s the usual range for ordinary quality descriptions. Calves again sold readily, £8 10s being the top money for runners. Boner cattle were easy to trade and a slight improvement was sometimes apparent. % Sheep and Pigs Competition for fat sheep again lacked enthusiasm and many descriptions were difficult to quit. Although there was a lowering of values in some instances, the market could be quoted firm. For wethers the top money was 20s against 20s 6d last week. Others ■sold from 17s to 19s w'hile a limited num'ber of woolly wethers sold for 235. Ewes were traded slowly, but prices were much the same, top sorts being quoted from 9s to Us. Although a lower schedule has been ruling for lambs, .these were very brisk of sale and prices were fully up to and sometimes slightly in excess of Ihose of last week. Although porkers were often 2s per head cheaper, baconers, which were penned in smaller numbers, were not affected to the same extent and values for these were very much the same, although the top money of 74s was Is lower than the best money of last week. Store pigs were slightly better of sale and in most instances values showed a slight improvement.
