NEW CHAMPIONS
NATIONAL SWIMMING HATCHWELL DEFEATS HANAN SOME THRILLING FINISHES (By Tctegrapn.—Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Tuesday Three titles changed hands this evening at the opening of the New Zealand senior swimming, championships at the Municipal Baths. P. Ilanan, Auckland, holder of the men s 100 yards free-styie championship, was beaten by R. Ilatchweil, Wellington. L. Newell, Canterbury, the one mile men's tree-style champion, was beaten by A. T. F. Stokes, Canterbury, and P. E. Mathieson, Auckland, 400 metres men's backstroke champion, although he finished an easy first, was disqualified for incorrect turning, ami the titie went to C. Cliff, Canterbury. There were some thrilling finishes during the evening and the standard of swimming was high, hut on the whole the times were slower than at the most recent championship meetings. This was accounted for, however, by the water, which is acknowledged to be slow. Five championship events were decided this evening. The first section of the men's diving championship was also held, but the points awarded will not be announced until Saturday night. Results of Events Following were the results:— 100 Yds.
