THE RACING WORLD

RACtftG FIXTURES febnntry IT. 18—WoodvUle Jockey Club. February Is—Tolaga Bay Jockey Club. "'''Tabniary la. 20 —Waikato Racing Club. «. ?s—Wanganui Jockey Club February 24. 55—Gore Racing Club. February 25—Waiapu Racing- Club. February 25. 27—Westland Racing: Club. February 25. 27—Te Aroha Jockey Club. GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS R. Cotter has acquired an addition to his team in Galloping Acre, who is among the track workers at Te Rapa. Forest Lake Forest Lake schooled in dashing style at headquarters yesterday and she should win races when she becomes solid. To date she has shown a deficiency of stamina. Not Re-handicapped Tosh has not been penalised by the handicapper in the President's Handicap on the first day of the Waikato meeting for his success among the sprinters on the latter day at Rotorua. Unpleasant Conditions Conditions were decidedly unpleasant at Rotorua on the second day when fine dust carried by a strong wind made it diificult for riders and horses to see where they were going. Under the circumstances it was fortunate that no mishaps occurred to mar an otherwise pleasant gathering. Scotland Returns At Rotorua on Saturday Scotland scored his first success since winning the Avondale Cup in 1U37 and now that he has struck form again he may prove troublesome in the Storey Memorial Handicap in which he is now assessed at 7.7. Scotland came from well back on Saturday and he buried the opposition in the last half-furlong. Te Aroha Jockey Club Acceptances for the first day of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's annual meeting on Saturday and Monday week, February 25 and 27, close on Tuesday (February 21) at o p.m. with Messrs Blomfield and Co., Shortland Street, Auckland, and with the secretary (Mr J. P. Somers), P.O. Box 245, Te Aroha, at 8 p.m. Forest Acre Forest Acre made a good showing for over a mile on the first day at Rotorua and as he has taken no harm from his racing at the thermal fixture he should command a measure of support in the Puketaha Handicap on the first day here. His form at Matamata was distinctly promising and hr n>v.v appears to be more solid than formerly. One Start—One Win One start —one win is the record of Suleiman this season and on the way he achieved that success at Ellerslie recently he may take a power of beating among the sprinters at Te Rapa. W'ith 8.13 he will, of course, have to give of his best but he is a genuine customer who will carry strong support in the betting lists. Is Handily Placed Gay Rose, with 7.12. is nioety placed in the Storey Memorial at Te Rapa on opening day and a line through her Matamata success would indicate that she will have to be reckoned with. Prior to Matamata she accounted for all but Cheval de Volee in the Ralph Handicap at Ellerslie and now meets him on 21b better terms despite her Matamata achievement. Working Well Pleuron, an acceptor for the Trial Stakes on the first day of the Waikato meeting, has been working attractively on the tracks at Takanini and promises to strip well for engagements over the week-end. At Ellerslie last month Pleuron faded out over the deciding stages of the Moana Handicap but has apparently been benefited with racing. Kaspian Again Falls The turning track at Rotorua beat Kaspian on Monday as he took time to get going and was called upon to stand Hunter’s Rose and General Riske up too much ground in the deciding stages. A long straight as we have at Te Rapa be to the advantage of a colt like Kaspian, but he does not appear among the acceptances for the first day here. What of Farland? Farland holds a unique record on the Te Rapa course and the old adage of “horses for courses” will ensure him a host of friends for his engagement in the sprint here on Saturday. Since winning at his first essay of the season at Te Rapa in November he has run a second and a third and despite the fact that his last two starts have seen him out of the money he should make a forward showing on his favourite course this week. Orwere Fit and Well Orwere, who has run some good races this term, has been working in dashing style at Te Rapa and yesterday morning cleared away from Calorie over the deciding stages of six furlongs in 1.17 3-5, which time, considering the distance the flags were out. was distinctly good. Orwere is an acceptor for the Linley Hack the first day here and should make a bold showing in the class. Silver Eagle Silver Eagle was responsible for a commendable effort on the first day of the Rotorua meeting when he beat Trevace narrowly in an exciting finish. The Bronze Eagle four-year-old has earned a penalty of 41b for his engagement in the Linley Hack at Te Rapa on Saturday but in his present condition he should not find 8.0 beyond him. Winning form is good form and Silver Eagle should account for more than beat him. A Strong Team M. B. Abbott, who Is now located at Rotorua, will be represented by a strong team at the approaching Waikato meeting, among them being Haile Boy, who showed a return to his lmst on the latter day at Rotorua whew he ran away with the Tarawera Highweight. On Saturday he is an acceptor for the Reerescourt Hack and appeals at this stage as being one of the hardest to dispose of. Chances of Midland Following his encouraging form at Te Rapa in November when he accounted for all but Brazilian in the Trial Stakes. Midland has raced disappointingly but on the way he has been shaping on the tracks of late it should not be long before hr* makes amends. He shaped pleasingly again yesterday and should not lack a following in the Trial Stakes the first day here.

A Speedy Sort The three-year-old Hunting Song filly, Hunter’s Rose, showed a fine turn of speed to win the Flying Stakes on the latter day of the Rotorua meeting. Jumping out smartly she hit the front wfthin a couple of hundred yards and though headed a little further on by Waltzing Lila she disposed of her at the half-a-mile and once she straightened up for home the issue never afterwards appeared in doubt. Hunto Shows Dash The two-year-old Hunto shaped well in a trial over half-a-mile at Te Rapa yesterday morning and indications are the Hunting Song colt will not be long in opening his account. To date he has started only on one occasion, that being at Avondale in September of last year when, after showing speed to the turn his condition gave out in the straight. He is not an acceptor for the first day here, but will bear watching tbe next time he is produced. Rollicker Unlucky Rollicker did not experience the best of luck in the running of the open sprint on the latter day at Rotorua. He was going well alongside Galilee near the three furlong peg, when Tosh, in making a forward move, appeared to come in on Galilee and send the latter over on to the favourite and check him appreciably. Following this occurrence Tosh shot to the front and the break he put on the field here took him to a three lengths victory. Fils de Vaals Fils de Vaals, who won brilliantly at Ellerslie last month, is engaged among the juveniles on the first day of the approaching Waikato meeting and she is sure to command a strong following. On that occasion when she won at Ellerslie she had to come from a long way back to get within striking distance of the leaders and she was literally flying at the finish to win poing away. The long Te Rapa straight should suit Fils de Vaals and she appeals as being one of the hardest to beat. APPEAL SUCCEEDS SUSPENSION OP R. W, SAVAGE (By TelegTaph—Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday The Taranaki District Committee tonight allowed the appeal of the jockey R. W. Savage against two months’ suspension imposed by the judicial committee of the Stratford Racing Club for starting from the wrong barrier position in the Kaponga Hack Handicap on the secand day of the Stratford race meeting on January 3.
