Hospital Loan The Waikato County Council, at its meeting to-day, decided to approve of the Waikato Hospital Board's proposed loan of £12,000. St. Valentine’s Day To-day is St. Valentine's Day. Its observance has been dropped in Empire countries, hut formerly it was the practice to send “Valentines.” artistic or satirical, to friends and foes. New Post Office The new post office in Grey Lynn. Auckland, the contract price for which wa-s £6817, was officially opened yesterday afternoon by Mr J. A. Lee, M.P. for the district. Record Trout Landed Fishing at Delatour's pool. Waitahanui, on Sunday, Mr D. M. Hanna landed the record fish on the fly for this season in Taupo when he took a perfect specimen weighing 11 ilb. Currency In London Gold in London was quoted yesterday at £7 8s 4£d an ounce (£7 8s 3}d on Friday), the dollar at 4.68 5-8 (4.68 13-16) and the franc at 176 15-16 (177). Vegetables In Sydney The prices of some vegetables crashed on the Sydney markets yesterday, resulting in best- beans and peas retailing at 6d per lb. Carrots and swedes also slumped to half last week's price. Potatoes dropped from £25 to £2l a ton. Bridge Construction The construction o<f the new concrete bridge over the Mangaonua Stream on the Cambridge-Eureka main highway has been progressing favourably during the last month, according to a report presented to the Waikato County Council to-day by the engineer, Mr A. A. Woodward.
Russian Ballet—Enjoy to the Full On a Waikato Times representative telling M. Victor Dandre, director of the Russian Ballet and husband of the late .Anna Pavlova, that he felt incapable of discussing the ballet really intelligently, as he knew so little about it—he could only enjoy it to the full and thrill to its magic—M. Dandre replied: “Well, isn’t that all that really matters—to enjoy to the full?”
Phyaloal Fitness While being willing to do what it could for the benefit of the scheme, the Waikato County Council to-day decided that # it had little time to devote to the* Physical Fitness campaign. “There are so many special fixtures these days,” remarked the chairman, Mr J. A. Sampson, “that it is becoming very difficult to fit in dates for them all.” **
Improving Main Highway Excellent progress is being made with, the reconstruction of the section near Taupiri of the MorrinsvilleTaupiri main highway. Ail the foundation work has been completed and a start has been made on the topcourse, half of which has been completed. The sealing of the completed section is dependent on the weather, as the road must dry out thoroughly before the work begins.
Tauupo Hotel Threatened Danger threatened the Terraces Hotel, Taupo, yesterday, owing to a serious scrub fire which started just behing the W r aipahihi Maori pa. The fire spread quickly in the dense scrub, and, fanned by a strong south-westerly gale, it made a rapid advance toward the hotel. The guests and staff packed their belongings and made a hasty departure. A sudden change in the direction of the wind, however, averted the danger.
Heavy Fire Loss Including buildings destroyed or considerably damaged, 43 separate properties with 86 separate occupiers (families or business Arms) were affected in the recent fire in Aitken Street, Wellington, according to the official survey. Of the 86 occupiers affected, 43, many of them heavy losers, carried no insurance on their belongings. Industrial Appeal The first appeal against a decision of the industrial magistrate, Mr J. A. Gilmour, S.M., was heard by the Arbitration -Court at Wellington yesterday. The appeal was made by the Auckland Furniture Trades Union against the alteration in the proportion of apprentices in the furniture manufacturing trade in the Northern Industrial District. The Court reserved decision. To Practise In Dominion A surgeon who was trained and practised in Berlin, but studied in Edinburgh for admission to the Royal College of Surgeons with a view to settling in a British country. Dr. H. Nelson, arrived in Wellington by the Dunedin Star. Dr. Nelson intends to remain in New Zealand to specialise in eve, ear, nose and throat surgery. He will also seek an opening for the practice of plastic surgery. Maintenance Charge Cecil Walter Stanton, of no fixed abode, appeared before Air S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Hamilton, this morning, charged with the breach of a maintenance order in respect of his wife. It was stated that defendant was £l2 in arrears up to January 6. lOn the application of Detective A. J. White, accused was remanded to appear at Auckland on February 16. Walker Loses Wager Before Messrs D. E. Pankhurst and D. Chat win left Te Kuiti for Te Awamutu on a walking journey for a wager, Mr C. C. Dallaston. the Te Kuiti scoutmaster, wagered them he would reduce their time by four hours. Messrs Pankhurst and Chatfield took in hours 23 minutes. Mr Dallaston set out with a well-known marathon runner and walked and ran alternately. When Kihikihi was reached Mr Dallaston had almost collapsed owing to the heat and rough roads. He and Mr McCalman, the runner, arrived at Te Awamutu four minutes too late. The journey took 6 hours 27 minutes and they required a journey of 6 hours 23 minutes to win the wager.
