SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

SCHOOL DIAMOND JUBILEE As a fitting conclusion to the day’s • festivities the sub-committee of the ( Whatawhata School Diamond Jubilee Committee, under the chairmanship of , Mr J. Iligginson, organised a highly ‘ successful euchre and dance in the Whatawhata Hall last Saturday evening. The function was one of the largest held in the district and attracted many old pupils and friends from j various parts of the country. , The hall was decorated with the . school’s colours in black and white ] and a very gay and happy time was , spent by the dancers and card players. . Excellent dance music was supplied by , Stevenson's Rhythm Boys, the M.C. ( being Mr D. Cunningham. Novelty , dances were won by Mr G. Howard ; Ilorotiu) and Miss Mina Mason and , by Mr W. Miller and Miss Thelma < King. i The Highland Fling danced by Miss E. Smith accompanied on the pipes j by Piper A. Sperry was much appreci- ( aied as was also a solo by Miss Joy ( Rowe, who was accompanied by j Mrs Rowe. Further pipe selections r were presented by Pipers A. and L. , Sperry. * Euchre attracted a large number of ‘ players to the card room, the prize- ( winners being: Ladies, Miss Bruce < (Hamilton) "l. Mrs Paton Koro- j matua , 2: men: Mr J. Kempthorne 1, { Mr Stewart 2. The carer steward was j Mr C. Yeoman. c During the evening, Mr 11. John- j stone, tile chairman of the Jubilee * committee, thanked those present l'or ( their help in making the day so sue- { cessful and paid a tribute lo Mrs Rowe j and Miss Nina Egan for their untiring } efforts as joint secretaries and asked > Miss P. Eyre to present them with [ bouquets as a slight appreciation of ( their services. Mrs Rowe suitably responded. r Supper was served by the ladies,

after which portions of the Jubilee' l cake were distributed.
