Y.M.C.A. CLUB TRIUMPH OF INITIAL CARNIVAL WAIKATO BANNER SENSATION One of the highlights of the 198839 swimming season in Hamilton, the first carnival of the Y.M.C.A. club held at the Municipal Baths on Saturday night proved an • outstanding success in every way. Fine organisation on the part of the secretary, Mr J. Haycraft, ensured the smooth running of the fixture, while the efficiency with which Mr 'L. I. Day, the starter, sent the fields away was something to be commended. Mr E. If. Grocott, president, Is to be congratulated on the triumph of his club's initial carnival. A large crowd of spectators witnessed the programme, which was noticeable for close finishes and fast times, and the spectators could not have experienced a dull moment with the events being run off so expeditiously. The relays were particularly exciting, the Waikato Banner contest bringing the gallery to its feet on more than one occasion. Good entries were received for the dual and inter-club relays, and the contestants fought out sterling battles in both. Girl Diver 1 * Success One of the main attractions during the evening was the appearance of Miss J. Macdonald, runner-up in the New Zealand intermediate girls’ dive at Rotorua this season. She annexed the women's dive at the carnival here, giving an outstanding display to head off her opponents with ease. The standard in this event proved particularly high, adding to its interest. The intermediate girls’ dive was won by Miss N. Hobbs, who led from Miee * B. Saunderson by less than a point. 1 The latter was particularly unlucky * not to secure first place, for she dived most attractively in this event and In addition was third in the senior title. Both the men's dive and the Intermediate boys’ dive were closely contested and revealed definite ability amongst the entrants. Hamilton Club was successful In the 300 yards inter-club relay, leading easily from start to flnish. Towards the end the winning combination drew away from the Morrinsville team which was in second place and. when the last lap began w’ere leading by almost half the length of the baths. Waikato Banner Always popular w’ith the crowd, the Waikato Banner Relay again saw the excitement of the spectators at a high pitch. Hamilton had an early lead from Y.M.C.A. at the start, and when the second swimmers left the board they were well ahead of Y.M.C.A. and Matamata. On the final lap Hamilton still showed their superiority but Y.M.C.A. were coming up fast to challenge them, while Matamata were showing signs of weakening. Hamilton touched first, however, well ahead of Y.M.C.A., with Matamata in third position. With the race completed, a sensational announcement was made. Hamilton was disqualified, one of their team failing to touch the end of the baths before the following swimmer left the edge. This gave Y.M.C.A. first position and Matamata second. The discrepancy was so noticeable that it was impossible to overlook such an error of judgment. Throughout the carnival the swimming was definitely on a level with anything previously seen in Hamilton and gave a fair indication of the standard of sport to which the Waikato public will be treated when the South Auckland championships are contested M the Municipal Baths on February In the results the following abbre- } viations for clubs are used: Matamata (MM), Paeroa P), Morrinsville (Mv), Hamilton (ll), Y.M.C.A.
