OBITUARY
COLONEL J. E. HUME / T LENGTHY MILITARY SERVICE (By T*'*grapn.—Press Association) NELSON, Monday The death has occurred of Colonel J. E. Hume, C.B.E. Born in India in 1866, Colonel Hume was the eldest son of Lieu-tenant-Colonel A. Hume, late of the Cameron Highlanders. He arrived in New Zealand in 1880 and joined the Civil Service as a cadet. In 1894-95 he was in command of the field artillery in the Urewera Country during the Maori trouble, and was appointed to command the artillery at Lyttelton in 1898. He served in the South African War with the second New Zealand Contingent and afterwards was director of ordnance and commandant of the Auckland and Wellington military districts. He served in the Gcfiat War from 1915 to 1919, being awarded the C.B.E. and being mentioned in despatches. In his younger days Colonel Hume was an all-round athlete and was champion sculler of the Star Boating Club.
