WAIKATO AMATEURS HAMILTON WIN SHIELD VTSF SOMMERS’ SIX SUCCESSES Und**r perfect weather conditions and before a record attendance, the Waikato Sub-centre, the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, conducted fts annual track, field and cycle championships on the Domain Sports ground Tauranga, on Saturday. The track bore evidence of intensive preparation, and the general arrangements for the meeting were of a uniformily high standard. Credit is due to the Tauranga Harrier. Amateur Athletic and Cycle Clubs, under whose auspices the meeting was controlled. A crowded gallery saw some exciting racing. A. J. Denz, of Hamilton, retained his 100 yards title, despite utroryr opposition. The 220 yds resulted in a remarkable finish, the judges being unable to separate C. E. Ooosman Hamilton and K. Rowsell. of Tauranga). Under New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association rules, a dead-heat must be run off. and arrangements have been made, at the suggestion of the Tauransra representative to decide this title at the “Fitness Week” sports mating to he held at Hinomoa Park Hamilton on Wednesday, February 22. R. B. Joves (Hamilton) and L. D. Irwin ''Hamilton) scored impressive doubles, the former taking the 220 yards and 440 yards hurdles and the latter the 880 yards and one mile flat titles. In the junior section I. Revcich (Thames' and W. Tanner (Tauranga) were outstanding. Devcich won the 120 yards junior hurdles the discus and the high Jinmp. In the latter event the three placed men jumped sft. 7in., 5fL 6in. and sft. 4in.. whereas the senior high jump later In the day was won at sft. 3s!n. Tanner established himself as a strong contender for national junior honours by annexing the 100 yards in 10 3-5 and the 220 yards in 23 3-5 secs., both in easy fashion. There was a sensation In the ladles’ section. Miss E. Sommers, fifteen-years-old Tauransra schoolgirl, outclassing good fields in no less than six events. The six successes were the 75 yards in 9 1-5 secs; the 100 yards fn I*2 sees.; the 220 yards in 28 secs.; the shot putt with 28ft. ljin.; the javelin, with 74ft. lln; and the discus, with 79ft. 34in. The Tauranga club’s find was particularly impressive in the shot frott and 220 yards events and should she parade at the national championship meeting to be held in Auckland on March 25, those honours are within her powers. J. Wooller 'Tauranga) took the honours in ah three senior cycle events in dashing style. He was followed home in the half and three-mile events by M f'iJ. Bridge (Hamilton has made marked improvement of late. In the junior cycling section N. Coker (Tauranga) and N. K. Freeman (Te Puke) divided the titles, the former narrowly defeating his club-mate Richards in the mile and the latter taking the half-mile. The Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club won the senior athletic banner, tne junior athletic banner and the Inter-club shield. The cycling banners, both senior and junior went to the Tauranga club.
