BECOMING URGENT

BPOIL FOR SPORTB GROUND REPRESENTATION QUESTION When asked to-day If the sporte bodies who had previously considered that the Hamilton Domain Board 6hould be an elective body would be satisfied with the greater representation of the Hamilton Borough Council on the Domain Board, Mr A. E. Gibbons, chairman of the Hamilton Rugby Union, stated that the question had not been considered by the sport* bodies jointly. Personally, however, he had in the past shared the sport* bodies' opinion on the matter which had arisen as a result of the apathy and apparent lack of a full appreciation by the authorities of the difficulties of sports bodies. The main objective." added Mr Gibbons, “has now been achieved ia the realistion by both the board and the council that the young but large section of the community needed more consideration and assistance. There is no doubt that both authorities seem fully alive to the sporting requirements of the town as an excellent plan for improving sports grounds has been submitted by the Domain Board. Steps Being Taken “The move indicates that steps are being taken by the governing authorities to bring Hamilton sports bodies more in line with the treatment received by sportsmen in towns like New Plymouth, Napier and Palmerston North. ‘The chief consideration at present, however," said Mr Gibbons, "Is the matter of spoil, a consideration which day by day is becoming more urgent. It is necessary that the unique opportunity afforded of improving Hamilton playing areas with spoil from Garden Place Hill is not lost by a wrangle over representation on the Domain Board between two governing bodies. The vast amount of spoil required to bring Hamilton's sports grounds into line with the requirements of the district could not be obtained from any other source but Garden Place Hill and as the hill is rapidly being demolished it is imperative that no time be lost. “In the general interest* of Hamilton and the Waikato, as Hamilton is rapidly becoming the mecca of sportsmen in the district, it is to be hoped." concluded Mr Gibbons, "that a speedy settlement of the representation question will be reached."
