SCOTLAND SURPRISES langollen wins well MIO FRATOLLO PREVAILS With weather and track conditions Weal the opening day of the Rotorua Racing Club’s annual meeting at Arawa Park on Saturday proved one of the most successful in recent years, the totalisator showing a substantial increase on last season’s figures. Scotland sprang a surprise in the chief event, the Rotorua Cup, while with Llangollen’s success in the ■print M. B. Abbot achieved a stable double. Mio Fratollo made amends for her defeat earlier in the day by winning the Geyser Hack, he being the only Te Rapa horse to realise expectations. He began well and after following the leaders Val Lu and RifT RafT to the home turn he came through In the straight to win in solid style. The ravourite Val Lu endorsed the good impression he made at Matamata and bis performance was distinctly meritorious in that he was not too well placed -- with a couple of furlongs to go. He should / do better. RifT RafT made the early running and across the top was showing out from Royal Abb and Val Lu. At the half-mile Star Vaal commenced to make a forward move and here had taken the lead from Riff RafT and Royal Abb with Devon at the head of the remainder. Val Lu asserted himself approaching the turn with RifT Raff and Royal Abb in close attendance but in the very deciding stages Royal Abb and Val Lu Tought it out for the former to gain a narrow decision bv half a head from the favourite, with Star Vaal three and a-half lengths away. Mio Fratollo made full amends for hts failure earlier In the day when he stayed on in a punishing fight to prevail narrowly rrom Racellne. who, arter being well back at the straight entrance, finished attractively to get within a neck of the winner. High Delight, who has been raring consistently of late, was right up while Ringshot, who had every chance, failed to go on with it Racellne, Bronwen and Mio Pratollo were the early leaders, Mio Fratollo hitting the front as they passed the stands from Rronwen. High Delight. Racellne and Aynho. At the half-mile Mio Fratollo was followed by Rronwen and these two made play from Ringshot and Aynho. Mio Fratollo led into the straight rrom Ringshot and High Deltght with Raceline commencing a forward move and in a tight finish. Mio Fratollo. capably handled by W. H. Jones, held on to win by a neck from Raceltne who. as usual finished well to beat High Delight by a head. Ringshot was fourth and then followed Aynho and Bronwen- Time, 1.51. At the halfmile Heroic Maid was still making play from Greek Queen and Karatokl, with Jean Quex handy. Heroic Maid turned for home in front of Karatokl and Greek Queen and she cleared right away in the straight to win very easily by four length* from Greek Queen, who beat laratokl by. three lengths.
