JAPANESE RELIGIONS Perhaps the most interesting of the religious feasts is the Feast of the Dead, which takes place in summer
and lasts for three days. All the spirts of those who have died during the proceeding year are supposed to rnme back at this time to bid a lon* last farewell to fhelr sorrowing frAends and relatives before they finally leave the earth. The tombs are brightly lit up with large lanterns so that the burial ground is a blaze of many coloured lights. Fires are lit on the hills, and rockets shoot up Into the bursting Into starry clusters, while the people eat and make merry while the spirits are still with them.
