SALE OF SOUTHDOWNS Messrs Wright Stephenson and Company, Limited and G. W. Vercoe and Company, Limited, auctioneers in conjunction, report as follows on their eighth annual Southdown ram fair at the showgrounds pavilion, Claudelands, on Wednesday:— A large entry of rams came forward. Competition throughout was erratic and although first-class rams sold well, inferior sorts were not wanted. On account of Messrs H. and S. Rhodes, of Paterangi, 7o 1-shear S.D. rams averaged £5 3s 6d; 20 1shear S.D. rams ex estate of Ellis Bros., Bulls, sold to 104gns., with an average of £5 8s; 25 1-shear S.D. rams ex Mr B. Symes, Otorohanga, averaged £7; 10 2-shear rams ex the same vendor averaged 4gns.; 1-shear S.D. rams ex Mr W. I. Taylor, Ohaupo, sold to 6gns.; 30 1-shear S.D. rams ex Mr W. W. Johnstone, Puketutu, averaged slightly over £5; S.D. rams ex Mr W. S. Germann, Paterangi, sold up to Signs.; 2-shear rams ex Mr H. Johnstone, Whatawhata, ranged in price from sgns. to 6gns.: 16 i-shear rams ex Mr A. C. Wheeler, Marlon, averaged slightly over £8; other S.D. rams sold from 3£gns. to 4 4gns.; inferior up to 3gns. OFFERING OF ROMNEYS
The same auctioneers report as follows on their eight annual Romney ram fair held al Claudelands Showgrounds on Thursday:— A full catalogue of rams was submitted to a large bench of buyers and anything showing quality sold well, while inferior sorts were not wanted. A two-shear stud Romney ram ex Mr J. E. Hewitt, of Mangamaire, was sold to Mr P. Bremer nf Tamahere for 35 gns; other stud two-shear rams from the same vendor sold from 13 gns. to 20 gns.; a one-shear stud ram ex Mr IP. Bremer, of Tamahere, realised 17 gns.: 40 one-shear Romney rams ex (Mr F. G. Johnstone, of Waitetuna, i sold up to 134 gns. and averaged £10; j2O ono-shear Romney rams ex Mr D. IG. Forlong, of Feilding. sold to 127 gns. with an average of £ll 10s; 21 lone-shear rams ex Mr Wilfred John|stone, of Tamahere, sold from i srns. j 1 o gns.; a consignment, from Mr .1. ' Oallison, Palmerston North, sold u|, to Is ms,: 33 c\ Blair and -ton. Wanganui, I averaged £3. with a lop prim of 7} | gns.: rams from Mr F. O. Stack, of Feilding, sold to 4 J gns.: a consignImrnt nf 34 rams ex Feilding averaged !£7 12s; fair natality rams ranged in price from 4 gns. io 54 gns.; while inferior sorts sold to 3 gns.
