ROMNEY RAMS

FAIR AT CLAUDELANDS QUALITY BORTB IN REQUEST Keen competition was shown for all good quality rams at the eighth annual Romney ram fair at the Claudelands Showgrounds yesterday, but rams of inferior quality were often difficult to quit. For flock rams 13 gns was the top money, while for a small offering of studs buyers paid from 12 to 35 gns. There was a considerable variation in quality, but some local and southern consignments were difficult to fault. The sale was conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Company, in conjunction with Messrs G. W. Vercoe and Company, with Messrs S. R. Webb and P. G. Vercoe in the rostrum. A feature of the market was the brisk demand for a small offering of stud rams. Top price of the day, 35 gns, was paid by Mr P. Bremer, of Tamahere, for an outstanding twoshear ram sold on account of Mr J. E. Hewitt, of Mangamaire. The same vendor sold another two-shear ram to Messrs Orr Bros., of Te Awamutu, at 20 gns. Another from the. same consignment sold to Mr W. C. Coulter, of North Auckland, at 12 gns. No transfer was included in this sale. A oneshear stud ram from Mr P. Bremer, of Tamahere, sold to Mr Mahood, of Te Akau, for 17 gns. Flock rams sold from as low as three gns to 13 gns, the latter figure being paid by Mr W. A. Thompson, of Aotea, for a pair of attractive rams bred at Hunterville. Mr F. C. Johnstone’s Sales The rams forward from the Waitetuna breeder, Mr F. C. Johnstone, comprised an outstanding line which commanded a brisk inquiry. The 20 oneshear rams in the first draft realised from 7 to 11 gns, while Mr Johnstone's second draft cleared from 6 to 10? gns. Mr Johnstone’s consignment was one of the best to come into the ring, his entries without exception being of ideal type. Excellent quality rams from the well-known Feilding breeder, Mr D. G. Forlong, of Bunnythorpe, were in keen request, llie Waimai breeders, Messrs T. C. and H. W. Wilson, obtaining practically the whole consignment of one-shear rams'at prices ranging from 9$ to 12? gns. Two were sold at lli gns. two at 9* gns. two at 12f, four at 11 gns 1 , two at 11? gns, four at 12 gns and two at 10? gns. A good sale was also experienced for the consignment of choice quality sorts from Mr 11. B. Johnston, of Feilding, rams from this vendor clearing from 7i fo 10 gns. Two sold at 10 gns, two at 9i gns, one at 8J gfis, and four at 7i gns. Entries from the Wanganui vendors, Messrs Blair and Son, made from 4 i to 7i gns, while those from Mr Wilfred Johnstone, of Tamahere, were traded from 6 to 8$ gns. Rams from Mr J.
