TROTTING AT EPSOM
AUCKLAND MEETING OPENS FINE FIELDB ENGAGED VAN DERBY’S RECORD ATTEMPT THE PROSPECTS REVIEWED (By “Padlock”) Fine fields are carded for the opening day, to-morrow, of the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting, at Alexandra Park, and indications are for interesting racing - . A feature of the day’s programme will be the attempt by the brilliant Van Derby to lower the mile record of 2.1 1-5, which he established on December 31 in conjunction with Lawn Derby. Betting will be on the win and place system. Following are the fields with a review of the prospects:— 12.0 TRIAL HANDICAP Of £200; trotters; limit, 3.45; 1} miles Air Pilot ... Lt. yds bbd Audrey’s Last . Lt. Aurumar 1 , 2 4 Dick Redmond Lt. Braemar ... 24 Frontier Boy . Lt. All Bingen ... 36 Gay Moko . . Lt. Iron Man ... 36 Golden Llanvabon ... -j Surprise . . Lt. Nelson Glory . . 36 Gold Kip ... Lt. Dilfasbion ... 48 Great Surprise Lt. Autumn Lou . 60 Moira Bingen . Lt. Reception ... 72 Win Huon ... 120 Audrey’s Last won well at the Summer fixture and off the front she appeals as being hard to beat. Great Surprise and Gay Moko are giving away four seconds but are not without good prospects. Gold Kip was a winner at the Cambridge fixture and Frontier Boy, Air Pilot and Moira Bingen may show’ to advantage. Aurumar is a speedy type and Llanvabon, who showed good form at the last Epsom gathering, should be in the picture at the end. Of the others the best may be Braemar, Dilfashion and Reception. The best supported may be — AUDREY’S LAST LLANVABON MOIRA BINGEN
The first division of, the Waiheke Handicap contains the material for an interesting contest. Tumble, who worked attractively at CL uoclands yesterday, should make a bold showing. Northern Smile, too, iias been shaping well in recent trials, while other useful sorts include Scottish Bard, Our Jewel, Don Walla, Jewel Crest and Silk Lady. Indications are the following will find support— TUMBLE SCOTTISH BARD DON WALLA I. GREAT NORTHERN TROTTING DERBY Of £400; three-year-olds; 1} miles Te Roto Auto Bingen Shadow Son Contender Star Guide Wishful Centaurus Kewpie’s Jewe’l Honey Pot Artist’s Gem Shining Link The success of Shadow Son in the New Brighton Challenge Stakes will claim him a strong following and he should prove one; of the hardest to beat. Centaurus was not Impressive at Hutt Park recently and will need to improve and Roto makes greater appeal although he has been off the scene for a spell. Wishful is reported to be useful and Contender, a good two-year-old last season, is assured of support. Artist’s Gem and Kewpie’s Jewel will represent the F. J. Smith stable, Kewpie’s Jewel, who won at Cambridge, appealing as the better proposition of the two. Of the others the best may be Auto Bingen. Favouritism may be divided tween—SHADOW SON KEWPIE’S JEWEL CONTENDER 2.16 OTAHUHU HANDICAP Of £400; limit, 4.33; 2 miles Bexley Girl . . Lt. yds bhd Our Peggy ... Lt. Kewpie’s yds bhd Triumph ... 24 Double Great . 12 Star Pronto . . 24 Kewpie’s King . 12 Kenworthy . . 36 Sandusky ... 12 Gold Dredge . . 48 Willie Derby . . 12 Navy Blue ... 48 Fernbrook Lass 24 Our War ... 43 In addition to Bexley Girl F. J. Smith will be represented by Sandusky so that the stable holds a strong hand. Our Peggy has been working well and will lack little on the score of condition for engagemenls at the meeting. Kewpie's King, Fernbrook Lass and Willie Derby are a dangerous trio and Kenworthy should carry his full measure of support. Our War and Navy Blue are in tiptop condition just now and a line through their work the other morning at Claudelands suggests they will both take a hand in what promises to be a stirring finish. Gold Dredge has prospects, too, in a race in which a well-supported trio may be found among— NAVY BLUE BEXLEY GIRL—SANDUSKY bracket OUR WAR
Adversity is capable of seeing the distance right out arid Derby Lu, who appears to be coming right again, may show to advantage. Kete Kura has been racing with a consistency that draws attention to his claims and Eyre has been working in improved style. HiHiicapper, too, has been shaping well on the tracks and should go well in the class. Young Pointer, Bismuth. Forest Jewel and Our Summer have prospects, while Peter Smith. Ih l nigh on a difficult mark, should add in le res I lo t lie issue. in Sanla Fe. Resistance and Parauri F. J. Smith holds a very attractive hand and at. ail are recent winners indications are
that the bracket will be in strong request. The public may sum up for — SANTA FE bracket KETE KURA EYRE 3.55
Bingen Sun disclosed encouraging form at the Summer meeting at Epsom, while Nelson Chief and Reception were also in the money at that fixture. All are sure to give a good account of themselves. Elissa is speedy but erratic and this may cost her support. Win Huon can be relied upon for a solid effort as also can Arapai, who worked attractively yesterday. Audo Patch is well placed and Pirate's Last and Mute have winning form to commend their claims. Te Kahu will be coupled on the machines with Nelson Chief and the combination should be prominent at the finish. Investors may prefer the credentials of— ARAPAI NELSON CHIEF—TE KAHU bracket ELISSA 4.40
Now that Axminster has struck form he may continue his winning way. Lynn Rey is an improver with excellent credentials and appeals as the likeliest to provide Axminster with keen opposition. Harlow and Tommy McElwvn will be bracketed and as in the case of earlier combinations they are sure to make matters interesting. Mandalay, Marcus and Hillcrest should make a bold showing and other good prospects include Kewpie's Queen, Here Oro. Silk Lady, Wall Street, Militia and Lady Potts. Stargum is not out of it on 24yds, but the elect of investors may be— AXMINSTER LYNN REY HARLOW—TOMMY MqELWYN bracket 5.26
If produced Van Derby would be the hardest to dispose of but the chances are he may not take bis place in the field after his mile record attempt earlier in the day. Uenuku will be decidedly dangerous, while Tangatu and Ringtrue should be all the better for recent racing. Vanora is useful and Sir Frank, who has been working well, and Musketeer, are In forward condition. Bill B. raced well at Hutt Park recently, while Olive King and Civic, who will be coupled, should give a good account of themselves. (iold Circle will have his measure of support in a race in which the best supporled may he (in the absence of Van Derby) IT.MTKU SIB FRANK TANGATU ADDINGTON MEETING CANTERBURY PARK CLUB FIELDS FOR TO-MORROW SOME LIKELY FANCIES Good fields are carded for the Canterbury Park Trotting - club's nice ing to-morrow and the follow lug horses in form are likely to find support in their respective engagements:— Progressive Handicap.—Lady Ed Patch’s Discovery.
