RACING AT ROTORUA
WELL-BALANCED FIELDS
FIFTEEN in cup field A FINE SPRINT ENTRY THE PROSPECTS REVIEWED (By “Martian”) Well-balanced fields, in which Waikato stables are freely represented, arp carded for the opening day tomorrow, of the Rotorua Racing Club's annual fixture and with fine weather on the day the club should experience a most successful trxture. The Rotorua Cup has drawn 15 acceptors, while in the open sprint 13 have survived the scratching pen. Win and place betting will be in operation. Following are the fields with a review of the prospects:—
Inquisitor has been racing consistently but unluckily in latest essays and, despite his solid poundage, he should make a solid showing. Romani beat all but High Delight on the latter day of the recent Ellerslie meeting and will have his opportunity here to make amends. British Banner, too, is another with the credentials to command respect. He won the Anniversary Handicap at Auckland in convincing style and promises to make a forward showing in this company. Haile Boy is useful and Raceline's return to form at the Matamata gathering will claim him a measure of support. Simint, Long Span and Mio Fratollo are all possibilities, while Ngakaru iA susceptible to improvement on latest essays. Of the balance the best may be Yaalso, Kotaki Acre, and Spinning Wheel, who has been shaping in outstanding fashion on the tracks of late. When the final figures are hoisted there should be good support forthcoming for— BRITISH BANNER RACELINE SPINNING WHEEL
The class is not strong and General Riske is not without prospects. Seven Seas has shown promise on occasions, while Devon has indicated that he may soon improve on his recent unplaced performances. Full of Scotch has been working well at Ellerslie over the past week and is apparently showing the benefit of his race on the latter day of the Auckland mid-sum-mer meeting. Gay Poto has been shaping satisfactorily on the tracks as also has the Beau Irish mare Irish Belle, who will need only to reproduce track promise to beat the majority. It is against her, however, that she will be having her first experience of A company. Ora King, Royal Message, ' Rival, Bulwark and Miss Rangi are not without prospects in a race in which the fancied division may include— DEVON FULL OF SCOTCH ROYAL MESSAGE
Maxam is speedy and early brilliancy will stand to her at Arawa Park. Noitaro lias been placed on seven occasions in ten starts and her consistency commends her. However, High Delight, a winner at Thames and Ellerslie, should hold her safe and indications are lie will be one of the fancied division. . Town Section failed at Matamata, but prior to that won uii either day at Thames. Ohmaha has been working in dashing style, while Silver Eagle was a recent winner and is nicely placed. Valdene's track work lias been all that could be desired and he is sure to race prominently. Pocket Venus has prospects, Kenneth Robert ran a fine second to High Delight at Thames, and Royal Message’s second to Bronwen in the Moana Handicap at Ellerslie recently held promise of early retribution. Travace and Friskland may be the best of the others in a race in which the elect of investors may be— HIGH DELIGHT SILVER EAGLE VALDENE
The Rotorua Cup of 1939 has attracted a fine field and the issue bears a very open aspect. King Rey has been off the scene for a spell, but as he usually races well fresh he will have to be considered. Kena appears to be on the upgrade, while Sergia, after her forward showing at .Ellerslie recently, should command a firm frdlowing. During the week she has been hitting out freely in her trials at Te Rapa. Te Hai is a prospect, whde Black Musk, who has been
running consistently of late should not fail to make a bold showing. Glen Abb. Star Artist and Miss Appellant are handily placed, while on the way he ran at Matamata the other day, to beat all but Gay Rose, Forest Acre will have to be taken into account. Poland and Very Glad may add some interest to the issue which at this stage mav be summed up among— SERGIA BLACK MUSK KENA 3.0
After a series of disappointments Pasture made amends at Ellerslie by winning the Trial Stakes hands down and now that she has struck form she may continue her winning way. Simla has done nothing much of late and there are others that will be preferred, among them being Devon, Royal Abb and Val Lu. The lastnamed indicated at the Matamata gathering that he should soon make amends for his third to British Nation and Kaspian there as it was his first race for a spell and the manner in which he was sticking on impressed. Luleen is a likely improver and Star Vaal should be all the better for the racing he has had of late. Nautipol may be the pick of the remainder. The public may prefer the credentials of— VAL LU PASTURE ROYAL ABB
A number of those entered here are engaged earlier in the and their earlier form may serve as a reliable guide to subsequent prospects. High Delight, British Banner, Town Section and Raceline are ail recent winners and if this be their mission they will have a firm following. Ringshot has been racing extensively but with little success and Aynho, winner of the Hack Cup at Thames, reads the better proposition. Valdene looks the part and Mio Fratollo should be all the better for racing at Matamata. Bronze Step has shown encouraging form this term and may be dangerous, while Bronwen, who won the Moana Handicap in convincing manner at Ellerslie last month, should account for more than beat her. It should be a fine betting race with support forthcoming for— BRITISH BANNER VALDENE TOWN SECTION 4.30
Sir Robin won in dashing style at Thames and the turning nature of the course will play into his hands. Solitary showed promise prior to Matamata but failed there and improvement on that running of Saturday will be necessary if he is to show to best advantage here. Mintlaw endorsed his good work prior to Matamata by prevailing handsomely and he will have splendid fitness on his side when he goes into the starter's hands at Arawa Park. Heroic Maid, Greek Queen, Jean Quex and Karatoke are likely improvers with a chance but indications are the public may prefer the credentials of— MINTLAW SOLITARY SIR ROBIN 5.15
Galilee .... 7 10 The sprint should provide a fine contest. That fine sprinter, Llangollen, will need only to take her place in the field to make a forward showing. Palustre has been shaping well on the tracks and Rollicker, following his impressive success at Ellerslie, should be difficult to dispose of as he is still in a handy position in the handicap. Tooley Street won like a good one at Matamata and Mon Acre’s Thames success will give her a chance. Tosh appears to be on the upgrade and Galilee, Noitaro, Royal Dance and Valimeen will carry their measure of support. When the final figures are hoisted there should be good support forthcoming for— ROLLICKER TOOLEY STREET LLANGOLLEN OWNERS’ REMINDER Acceptances for the first day of the Waikato Racing Club’s Summer meeting, at Te Rapa, on February 18 and 20, cjose this evening at 8 o’clock with the secretary (Mr E. H. O’Meara), P.O. Box 351, ’phone 3140, Hamilton.
