CUP AT STAKE
POLO CHALLENGE MATANGI AND CAMBRIDGE BIG FIELD-DAY TO-MORROW Not since the thrilling polo encounters were staged at the Savile Cup tournament at Claudelands last season have enthusiasts of this fast sport, which is rapidly growing in popularity throughout the Auckland province, had an opportunity of seeing such a fine programme as will be staged at the Cambridge racecourse to-morrow afternoon, when a big field-day will be staged by the Cambridge Polo Club. The main attraction on the programme is the second fixture, which "’ill bring the champion team of the Dominion, Cambridge A, into action against the rapidly improving Matangi combination in the second match between these teams tin’s season for the Cameron Cup. leading scratch challenge trophy in the Auckland province other than the Provincial Championship Cup. Superiority Challenged At the present time Cambridge holds the Cameron Cup, but the team’s superiority over the province this season is being challenged in no uncertain manner by Matangi, which, previously the leading provincial team and in 1935 the first Waikato combination to annex Hie Savile Cup —blue riband of polo in the Dominion—is returning to its former outstanding form after a rather lean period for two seasons. Great interest will centre around -Matoiigi's attempt to regain the supremacy of the district, for the combination showed definite promise in drawing in the earlier Cameron Cup challenge against the Cambridge quartette when each team scored tw r o goals. First of the three big games to be staged at Cambridge to-morrow will be the encounter be-tw-een Auckland and a Waikato team. Great interest is being displayed in the appearance again of an Auckland polo team, for the players from the city were supreme over the province 30 years ago. Morrinsville In Form Final match of the day will be the game for the Somers Cup between Cambridge B and Morrinsville. The Morrinsville club is one of the most enthusiastic in the Dominion and is rapidly attaining a high standard of play. Cambridge B, on the other hand, were runners-up for the Savile Cup last season at Claudelands and gave indications of the strength of the Cambridge club in being able to field two first-class teams. Cambridge will be the mecca of polo enthusiasts to-morrow, and high standards of play are bound to be reached for the Waikato teams have deserved the reputation acquired of being the most dashing exponents of the sport in the Southern ‘Hemisphere.
