BEEF VALUES RISE
SHEEP STEADIER KEEN COMPETITION FOR PIGS WESTFIELD FAT STOCK SALE AUCKLAND, Wednesday Another small entry of ox beef re- i suited in a sharp rise in values at the I Westfield fat stock sales yesterday, I competition for all classes being keen. I Cows and heifers made late rates. For j sheep buyers were less active than at the last sale. Lambs sold steadily. A shortage of prime quality in the calf entry caused bright bidding at the start of the sale, but the demand later slackened and late-sale calves were hard to quit. Rates for both bacon and pork were unchanged. A smaller yarding and consequent keen competition resulted In a rise in values for ox beef of all classes equal to about Is per 1001 b. Prime medium and light-weights also were affected. Quality cows and heifers firmed in price, but medium and inferior sorts were hard to quit, average values generally remaining unchanged. The best steer price was £ls 2s 6d, compared with £ls a week ago, and four other lines equalled the latter figure. Cows and heifers reached a top of £lO 12s 6d, the same as the previous best. Bidding was steady throughout the sheep sale, competition for the average entry being less keen than last week, ‘ when prices rose. Wethers sold to 23s 6d, fractionally less than before, and ewes reached a top of 14s, against 15s 9d. Competition for an average entry of lambs was only steady, and they lost some ground, compared with the sale last week. The best price was 265, against 27s 6d, while unfinished lambs sold to 14s 6d. There was a shortage of good quality runners and vealers in the calf sale, the major proportion of an average yarding being poor and rough sorts. The demand for prime quality was keen early in the sale and values improved considerably on last week’s depressed rates. Competition slackened later, and average prices were only slightly better all round. Runners sold to £8 3s, which was 3s better than before, and vealers again sold to £6. Prime baconer and porker values showed an improving tendency in a small average yarding of pigs, competition being keen. Average quotations were unchanged at 6sd to 6sd per lb. for baconers, and Gsd to 7d per lb. for porkers. Top prices inboth sections were the same at £3 18s and £3 Is, though in the case of porkers the range was wider.
