CAMPAIGN PROGRESSES
PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK SPORTS MEETING PROGRAMME At a meeting of the Hamilton ; “Physical Fitness Week” committee ! last evening the secretary-organiser, j Mr C. G. Hunt, reported that he had been successful in arranging for the £25 needed in guarantees and that he had been in communication with the three Hamilton bands with a view’ to obtaining their assistance. In company with the Hamilton borough engineer, Mr T. Webster, and members of the Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club he had inspected llinemoa Park, the proposed venue of a floodlight sports meeting. The engineer was of the opinion that sufficient lights could be installed, and the Mayor had given an assurance that the. council would underlake the work of erection. Mr Hunt considered that the sports meeting would be considerably enhanced if a procession were held in conjunction with il, ft various sports bodies to be represented and to carry banners urging the public to attain physical fitness. Application had been made to the council for holding such a procession. The Waikato Cricket Association had decided to proceed with the suggested inter-house cricket tournament, while an assurance had been given by the tennis authorities that they would co-operate where the procession was concerned. A WaikatoTaranaki representative tennis match was to be played in Hamilton on February 18, and Mr Hunt suggested that this be included as one of the official functions of “Physical Fitness Week.*’ A programme for the sports meeting was submitted by Mr R. B. Joyes, and this was referred to a sub-com-mittee consisting of Messrs Joyes, W. Sullivan, C. A. Voss, L. Cross, A. Donaldson and W. Percy for consideration. Too short notice had been given for the. military bodies to stage a display, said Lieutenant H. McDonald. Mr Sullivan, speaking on behalf of the schools, said a programme of folk dancing and hall games could be arranged to fit in with the programme, while Mr A. Donaldson, on behalf of the Association football clubs, intimated that players would be prepared to take part, in a short demonstration, arrangements to be made at the dis- ; crimination of the committee. ! The control of the procession was left to Lieutenant McDonald, and the following sub-committees were set up: Grounds, Messrs Sullivan, A. H. Malcolm, E. P. Trevena and Hunt; gates, Messrs A. E. Gibbons, F. A. Swrarbrick and J. Richardson: catering, Messrs ( Percy and Donaldson; advertising, Messrs H. D. Caro, W. M. Cann, Gibbons and Hunt. SURVEY NECESSARY GRANTS FOR SPORTS BODIES DEALING WITH APPLICATIONS (By TrOf'o-rsnD —T»r»o« A««nrfaTlrm) WELLINGTON, Wednesday Dissatisfaction expressed by some sports bodies on the failure of their applications for grants under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act, notably for the payment of customs duty on sports equipment Imported 1 from overseas, was stated by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, today as having arisen through misapprehension and lack of appreciation of the position. “Until a survey has been completed,” the Minister stated, “of existing facilities for the further development of sport and recreation in the Dominion it is not practicable to consider applications from sports bodies for grants to meet what bodies say are their immediate requirements. This reply must go at present to all bodies seeking to obtain monetary help. Applications that come in give information of district requirements useful, for records which will be handled when the survey and recommendations are under consideration.” The Minister pointed out that requests had been received for the remission of customs duties on goods which could be made in New Zealand. He felt that clubs would appreciate the desirability of obtaining equipment in their own land. He added that in recent months great advancement had been made in the formation of committees to work in with the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation in a Dominionwide survey to be undertaken of sports facilities and requirements.
