CHRISTMAS LATE SHOPPING NIGHT (Special to Times) MATAMATA. Monday. The Mayor, Mr W. A. Gordon, has issued a statement asking Matamata retailers to observe Friday, December 23, as late shopping night during Christmas week. This announcement follows a period of intense controversy on the subject. At a meeting convened by the Chamber of Commerce it was decided to circulate a petition among business people, and this resulted in a majority of seven in favour or Saturday late night. Later some 28 business people who had not signed the , first petition presented another list to the 1 Chamber or Commerce asking for Friday late night. noth lists were handed to the. Mayor and he was asked to make a decision. The Mayor asked the Farmers’ Union for its opinion on the matter but it was not prepared to give an opinion either way.
