A MILD MAY
WAIKATO ESCAPES FROSTS WELL-SPREAD RAINFALL One or the mildest Mays on record was experienced in the Waikato last month, when conditions were generally much warmer than at the opening of .the winter. In all, five frosts were recorded in Hamilton, the most severe being 8 degrees on May 21. A succession of hard frosts is rather the exception than the rule during May, hut this year temperatures all round resembled those of spring rather than winter months. Rainfall was well spread over the 31 days. Die total fall aggregating 4.12 in. compared with the average of 4.63 inches, which was a complete contrast to last year when several heavy falls resulted in 7.02in being recorded. Frosts last year were also less frequent than for a considerable period, only four being experienced compared with 16 in the two previous years. As a result of the mild conditions pasture growth through the district has received little or no check with the coming of winter and it will need a number of severe frosts to give any substantial set-back.
