AT TE AROHA
Mrs Sharkey presided at the May meeting of the Te Aroha branch of the Women's Institute. Arrangements were finalised for the birthday celebration and card evening. | Mrs Barber was accorded a vote of thanks for the ladies’ trophy for the occasion. Mrs Sharkey won the thrift section competition and Mrs Newsham was the winner in the eggless cake contest. Mr L. Hopkins spoke on “The Law as it Affected Women” and showed that since 1936 when the Law Society had legislation passed, the status of men and women had been equal in responsibilities as well as in privileges. Questions of responsibilities of officers and to hired help were answered fully by the speaker who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. AT WALTON The May meeting of the Walton ibranch of the Women's Institute took j the form of a “Friends’ Day.” Mrs i Barlow presided and there was a good ■attendance. | Mrs C. Given and Mrs J. Philpott jwere in charge of a “White Elephant” (table, which caused amusement, and 'did a brisk trade. The proceeds were ito augment the Institute funds. Mrs |W. E. Franklin was in charge of the sales table. . Mrs G. B. Way gave the first of a (series of talks on “Women who have 'made their mark in the world.” This |was the beginning of the “Golden j Thread” in the Walton branch. Mrs Rix gave a demonstration of | floral work and showed the method (employed in making a wreath. Afternoon-tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames W. E. Wilson, Belfield, Todd and Miss Todd, assisted by members of the committee. AT PUTARURU The May meeting of the Putaruru branch of the Women's Institute was held in the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union rooms, Mrs Anderson presiding over a good attendance. Three new members were enrolled. The motto for the month was “Rise on stepping stones to better things" and the roll call “Improvements 1 should like to see in the district,” brought forth suggestions from each member. I A banner worked by Mrs Paxton was presented by her to the branch. A vote of thanks and appreciation was accorded Mrs Paxton. An interesting letter from the branch's pen friend in England was read and Mrs Denley undertook to reply to it. Mrs Van Veen demonstrated the making of a bridal sheaf, ladies’ spray i and man's buttonhole, the members showing their interest. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Van Veen. Competitions were won as follows: Savoury dish, suitable for eating at tea, Mrs Addenbroo-'e 1. Mrs Sayers 2. }*rs Thompson, 3; patching. Mrs Haines 1. Juniors: Plate of scones, Rose White 1, June Anderson 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Birgquist, Young, Woskit and Denley. f PRESENTATION AT SPRINGDALE At the recent presentation evening in honour of Mr and Mrs Hitchman, held in the Springdale Hall, a presentation from members of the Women's InI stitute of a handsome silver cake dish j suitably engraved was made to Mrs j Hitchman
