ALL BLACK TRIALS

WAIKATO NOMINATIONS WYNYARD AND RUSSELL CHOSEN TWO BACKS AND TWO FORWARDS Four Waikato Rugby footballers have been nominated for All Black and North Island honours in the New Zealand side to visit Australia tills season, by the Waikato sole-selector, Mr J. R, McKenzie. The nominations, announced this morning, are: J. G. Wynyard (Waipa), age 23; weight, 14.8; height, 6ft. 3in. Side row. E. H. Catley (Taupiri), age 22; weight, 13.8; height, 6ft. Hooker. L. T. Russell (Morrinsvllle), age 22; weight, 10.2; height, sft. 9ins. Half-back. R. Everest (Hamilton), age 23; weight, 11.0; height, sft. lOin. Centre-threequarter. J. G. Wynyard is the only nominee who has previously gained All Black honours, having toured with the 1935 team to Great Britain as a side-row forward. On that tour Wynyard played eight games. He was not selected to participate in the All Black trials In

preparation for the Test matches against the Springboks last season, but this year Wynyard has revealed much more convincing form, playing for Te Awamutu in the Waikato Stag Trophy championships. He carries more weight than in 1935 and is much better class, being outstanding in the line-outs and in the loose. As a break-way he has a sound knowledge of tactics. *

E. H. Catley Is the hooker for the Waikato representatives. He was nominated for the All Black trials last season but did not play in any of the game's. He hooked for the combined Waikato-King Country-Thames Valley team against the Springboks at Hamilton and won as much of the ball as any other hooker in the Dominion in subsequent matches. He is another hard-working forward who excels in the line-outs and loose as well as the tight. He is a solid type. Russell Looks Certain L. T. (Russell is the Waikato representative half-back. He played in two of the five All Black trials last season but unfortunately he was injured when his selection for the test side seemed very likely. In the trials he proved clever and a good all-round player. Quick dashes from the' position, accurate long passes and sound defence made him the best half-back of the trials. He is at the peak of his form at present, having recovered from his injury, and his selection for the Australian tour is probably assuredf The Anal nominee is R. Everest, the only Hamilton player in the quartette. He' played centre for the combined team at Hamilton and indicated that he is a capable player. He is possibly one of the soundest defensive threequarters in the Dominion, being very reliable in tackling. His speed is a great asset. W- Bowman (lock), S. T. Reid (lock), R. H. Ward (side row), D. Dalton (front row), E. Jackson (front row). South Canterbury G. T. Adkins. T. C. Morrison and C. K. Saxton. North Otago S. E.
