ROVERS AGAIN
ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL HUNTLY BTARR DEFEATED SECOND SUCCESSIVE GAME Although they did not win by such a large margin as in their previous game Claudelands Rovers repeated their performance of beating Huntly Starr when the two teams tried conclusions again at Seddon Park on Saturday. Huntly showed more determination than in their earlier encounter with Rovers, and apart from showing a fairly strong defence they lock a good share of the attack. The teams lined as follows: Claudelands Rovers Schonau, Rogers, Clark, Haddock, G. Crabb, Humphries, Whyte. Doug, Crabb, Wallace, Young, Don Crabb. Huntly Starr —Fenny. A. Hall. Black, E. Hall, Allsopp, J. Spiers. Elsbury, Carter, Ilazell. A. Spiers. Finlater. Although Rovers took the early offensive, Don Crabb missed with a difficult shot, but shortly afterwards he went astray sac-ly with ail easier chance. Play centred in neutral territory for some time, with little advantage to either side, but eventually the visiting forwards pressed their way within striking distance.. With the sun in his eyes Schonau was- in a difficult position, and was hard put 1o clear from several shots. Huntly kept up the pressure and opened their tally when A. Spiers found the back of the net- Huntly 1, Rovers 0. The home team retaliated for a time, but although they pressed right down to the opposing goal the defence was strong and the visiting forwards soon had Schonau on the move again. Elsbury had a short run down the line, beating Clark, but the effort came toTiouglit and play soon reverted to the midfield. The visiting fullbacks were kept busy shortly after, when Rovers’ forwards took up the running again and after most of the forwards had handled Doug. Crabb took possession in a handy position and equalised with a fairly easy score. Rovers 1, Huntly 1. A. Spiers on Attack Rovers endeavoured to improve on their position when they set up a solid invasion, but the opposition was too strong for Young when lie took possession in a handy position, in reply, Huntly took the play with them and A. Spiers looked dangerous when he
went away on his own. Clark was steady on defence, however, and proved a handy safeguard for Schonau. Another sudden attack brought Schonau right out from his goal and matters looked dangerous when he went down In attempting to clear. A penalty against Huntly cleared the position and once again the advantage was with Rovers. Good shots from Doug. Crabb kept Fenny busy, while Whyte, at outside right, also gave a good account of himself. Fluctuating play followed and halftime came without alteration to the score. Upon the resumption Huntly set up a determined attack and held the opposition back in their own territory for a time, but Rovers broke away and the play swung from end to end for a time. Don Crabb and Doug. Crabb tried hard with good shots at goal, but Fenny showed a safe pair of hands and turned the ball over the bar. Rovers’ Second Goal Following a long and determined spell in Huntly’s territory Wallace took possession well out, and after dribbling close in to goal put his learn in tlie lead when he sent the ball past Fenny into tlie corner of the net. Rovers 2, Huntly 1A fairly long spell of play in neutral territory followed before the home team took up the attack again. They were unable to hold it. however, and the visiting forwards were soon on the run again. Humphries was a spoiler, but A. Spiers beat him and shot hard at goal. Schonau made a good save, however, turning the hall round the post. In the ensuing play in Huntly's territory Whyte centred well and Doug. Crabb shot at goal. Fenny was too quick however, and sent the ball out of danger. Rather unexciting midfield play, characterised by high kicking, followed for a long time before Rovers’ forwards took up the running again. A sudden reverse took Huntly close and for some time it seemed as though they would equalise. Their repeated efforts were to no effect, however, and they soon found themselves bent on defence again. From a forward rush I Wallace shot hard at goal, hut Fenny was sound and cleared well. Y'oung came in fast, however, and drove hard into the back of the net. giving Fenny no chance. Play finished shortly afterwards with the score— Claudelands Rovers .... 3 Huntly Starr 1 Mr T. Chalklin was the referee.
