RAID AT AUCKLAND
ALLEGED TWO-UP BCHOOL FIFTY MEN PROSECUTED (By Telerraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Monday Fifty men appeared in the Police Court to-day as the result of a raid by detectives on premises in Queen Street on Saturday evening, bail having been granted over the week-end. Clarence William Russell, was charged with being the occupier of the premises and using them as a common gaming-house and Walter Charles Absolum and Albert James Thomas were charged with assisting in the conduct of a gaming-house. On the application of counsel these three obtained a remand until June 7. In the case of the men charged with being on the premises those who had previously been convicted with gambling offences were fined £5 and the others £3 each. The police alleged that twoup was played and said the building was barricaded and fitted with electric alarms but the first of the detectives got through without being observed by a group of men gathered round a billiard table.
