NAZI OFFICER ARRESTED WITNESSES IN INQUIRY (United Press Atsn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrlg-wj NEW YORK, May 28. The Investigation in progress" of the alleged activities of spies in the United States took a sensational turn to-day when the United States Attorney, Mr I.amar Hardy, ordered the arrest of the Nazi political officer, the second radio officer, a cook and a steward of the liner Bremen as material witnesses. Mr Hardy said lie wished to find out whether there had been obstruction of Justice in Dr. Greibls flight from the country, also whether there had been unlawful activity under the espionage statute. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Dr. Greibl on a charge of violating this statute. Also on the same charge a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Werner Guden- ! berg, who escaped from surveillance | and sailed by the liner Hamburg vm j Thursday. This warrant will be ; served when the ship arrives at Cherbourg. Orders from Marls Gudenberg formerly was employed at a plant which manufactures secret : Army and Navy aeroplanes, j The New York Times says both men were trusted witnesses who were aiding the Government in its efforts to break up the spy ring, but both fled apparently under duress from hidden Nazi superiors who gave them orders from the homeland. | Federal agents have been a«sirned I the duty of keeping watch for 24 hours a day over 26 other witnesses.
