The exquisite mausoleum of purest marble was constructed as a monument to the memory of his favourite wife, by the Emperor Shan Jehan in 1629. Twenty thousand men were employed incessantly on it for twenty-two years. The complexity and grace of the general design, and the elaborate perfection of the workmanship, are alike remarkable.
