At least one hundred persons were Injured and hundreds gassed i when the police and 3000 pickets battled for three hours at the strike-bound Qoodyear rubber plant. The police, using tear gas and truncheons, moved on the pickets, who retaliated with stones and fought savagely in the blood-stained streets. Ohio’s Adjutant-General, fearing further trouble, ordered 3000 militia ‘o be held in readiness for sudden mobilisation. Several thousand people fought the police with sticks and stones. Militia reinforcements were called out. New strikes have occurred, adding to the tension -caused by the dock sanitary strike. CLASH WITH THE POLICE FIFTY PEOPLE INJURED United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. lopyrighi DETROIT, May 26 The most, serious clash in connection with a labour dispute sinice the recent revival cf the activities of the Committee of Industrial Organisation resulted in serious injury to at least 50 people, including several policemen. It occurred when an attempt was being made to escort non-strikers through the picket line of the Automobile Workers’ Union, surrounding the American Brass Company’s plant. Mounted policemen used tear gas against the 600 pickets, many of whom were women and children, and finally succeeded in breaking up their resistance. The strike has been in progress five weeks. It was called as a protest against a 10 per cent, cut in wft_.es.
