HARRIER JOTTINGS
NOVICE RACE RESULTS TAYLOR’S GOOD WIN TEAM FOR AUCKLAND (By “Stamina”) The first harrier race of the season, the annual Novice Road Race, was decided by the Hamilton Club last Saturday afternoon, when a select Held left from the Y.M.C.A. on their three-mile journey around the Lake. The race was confined to those who had not previously won a harrier trophy, and this left a number of club members ineligible. As in past years, the trail led along Bryce Street, up Tainui Street, through the Lake grounds, and home via Ruakiwi Road, Tainui and Bryce Streets. Pratt. Jowere and Richardson were the first to set out on the minute mark, and they were followed by Hill and Bloore ten seconds later- Taylor left at lmin 15sec, Choat at 2.10, Millar and Armstrong at 2.20, and Trow, the back-marker, a minute later. A Good Finish Bloore, Hill and Taylor early overtook the limit men and led through the Lake Grounds with Bloore making the pace. Going up Ruakiwi Road Taylor and Hill went Into the lead and were clear of the field into Bryce Street. In a very strong finish Taylor registered a comfortable win and Hill finished a very creditable second. Next to reach home was W. Choat, who finished 60yds ahead of Millar, with Armstrong 80yds further back in fifth position. Time honours went to W. Choat, who covered the distance in 16min 23sec, while D. Millar and J. Armstrong were the next best, with 1 Groin 25sec and 16min 36sec respectively. Trow was unlucky not to do better, as he suffered from stitch on the journey, but no one had a chance with the winner- Taylor ran easily throughout, and his time of 16min 38sec for a first-year harrier goes to show that he may be a champion distance man in the making. Choat's effort in gaining fastest time was consistent with his recent form and he should give a forward showing in the Lake Pupuke Road Race in Auckland on June 4. The Other Pactk The majority of those harriers who were ineligible for the novice race comprised regular members of the course, and they set out over practically the same course, ahead of fche racers. Covering half a mile furtfier than those in the race, they wasted no time, and a brilliant road trio in Collins* Crabb and Irwin came home together. Smith and R. Gardner were the next to finish the journey, the former's time being better than that of the others, as he conceded the field a fair handicap at the start. Team for Auckland The following team has been selected to represent the club in the Calliope Club’s road race on June 4: A. Crabb (captain), T. Collins, E. K. Trow, !R. Gardiner, L. Irwin and W. Choat. M. Smith and R. Dent will be emergencies, and will in any case participate in the race. As far as can be ascertained, the points of the first four members of the team home couut for the club, and Hamilton, on paper, appear a very strong combination, which should trouble the city team. Arrangements are already in hand in Hamilton for the Auckland Provincial Cross-Country Championship, to be held here on August 13. Club officials are inspecting possible sites for the event, and it is anticipated that a definite track will be decided on at an early date.
