THE JUNIOR LEAGUE
SOCIETY FOR PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS ** * wlil tr y t 0 make any animal I rave in my care very happy.”
D«*r Girls *nd Boys,— Last week I asked you to do ’ til you eould to provide food for the birds ' during the cold weather when it Is so hard for them to find food for themselves. The shooting season has commenced and It makes me feel very sad when I see men and boys going round destroying birdJust because It gi*e» tb*T.i some sort of satisfaction to kill things. l ast year I was vtstttng a house when a bov came home carrying a sporting rifle, .i a*ked what he shot with It, and he replied. •* Oh. anything—birds and labbits.” | asked: “ Why shoot birds, do they do any harm?’’ His answer was “ >o, but I love popping them off.” I tried to point out that the birds had the same right to live «« he. but he saw nothing wrong in shooting them for “ fun,” as he railed it. \ thought how very sad It was that as a little bov he had never been taught to show love and re\ erenre for the beautiful things •<( uod*s creation. Had he been so taught he could not have found pleasure m going out and robbing them of their lives. As that bo\ grows up to manhood he will probably
, develop a selfish and cruel nature and , will not have any thought for the happiness of others. He may be a hard, unhappy man. too. When we plant a very young tr#*e we place a straight support In the ground to help to Keep thp stem of the tree straight. IT a young tree Is allowed to grow crooked it will have to keep its ugly rfooked stem for all Its lire. It is Just the same with children, ir they allow bad habits to grow when they are young those habits heroine woven Into their chararterfstirs and It Is almost Impossible to get rid of them. So. children, try hard to practise only those habits which will help lo build up a loving and lovable character. Remember, too. It Is orten the little things which count Tor so much, and which make such a difference In the happiness <»r those around us. i title deeds of kindness, l ittle words or love. Make mis Earth an Eden, Like the Heaven above. Good-bye, TINKERBELL
