HELP THE CARPENTER Robert is apprenticed to a carpenter, and has been told to make a piece of wood to fit a hole in a floor which is being repaired. He had been given a piece of wood 2in. x Jin., and the hole which is to be covered is
3in. x Jin., how is he to cut the wood when he may only divide it into two pieces which are then put together again? This condition was emphasised expressly by Robert's master. (Solution at Foot of Column)
