AT MATANGI
The monthly meeting of the M&tangi branch of the Women's Institute was held in the hall on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Mc-Kerrow presided The meeting opened with the reading of the Greed, and the roll-call, “A new library book,” was well responded to. A report of the annual conferenco of the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes, held in Hamilton recently, was given by the Matangi delegate, Mrs Trownson. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A. competition arranged by Mrs W. McClennan was won by Mrs A. Jamieson, and another competition was won by Mrs H. Thompson. *The trading table did good business in the hands of Mrs B. Hogan. The cooking competition for the day, plain scones, was won by Miss Lucy Ringer. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames A. McClennan and J. B. Taylor. AT NQARUAWAHIA The monthly meeting of the Xgaruawahia branch of the Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Mrs M. Loughnan being in the chair. Mrs Treloar gave an interesting demonstration of wood pulp flower making and also exhibited some beautiful examples of coloured craft work. The competition, pickled onions, resulted in Mrs Loughnan gaining first place with Mrs Rowe second and Mrs Kemp third. A letter was read from the Y.W.C.A. asking the Women’s Institute to assist by sending some articles for their stall at the Waikato Winter Show. The hostesses were Mesdames McBurney and Harrop. AT WHATAWHATA The May meeting of the Whatawhata branch of the Women’s Institute was held in the local hall recently, Mrs Rowe presiding over a fair attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute song. An invitation to their birthday party ; on the afternoon of June i 1 was received from the Horotiu Institute. Raglan Institute also sent an invitation to their birthday party which will take place on the evening of June 1. Mrs Warren, the Group convener, presented the Institute with a bell for use at meetings. Mrs Warren’s kindness was much appreciated by members. The roll call “A competition I would suggest” brought forth varied and helpful suggestions. The competition “A Thrift Article,” was won by Mrs Anderson who entered a novel tray made from spent matches. Mrs Rowe asked Mrs R. Blackett to accept a token of goodwill from the Institute in honour of her recent marriage. The members accorded Miss Blackett musical honours. The retiring secretary, Miss D. Eyre, was also presented with a gift in appreciation of her services to the Institute during the past two years. Mrs Blackett and Miss Eyre suitably responded. The remainder of the afternoon was spent finalising arrangements for. the Waikato Winter Show Court. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Rowe and Rankin. The roll call for next month will be ‘‘The talkie I enjoyed most” and the competition will be for an article in tatting or crochet. AT JUBILEE The monthly meeting of the Jubilee branch of the Women’s Institute was held in St. Janie’s Hall, Massey Street. Mrs Hogarth presided over a fairly large attendance. After the Creed and the Institute song arrangements were made regarding the Institute' Court at the forthcoming Winter Show. Mr Treloar gave an interesting lecture on phrenology for which he was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions were won as follows:—Paper pulp, Mrs McLachlan 1, Mesdames Craighead, Thornley and Cooper-Smith 2: best plain sponge. Mrs Burton 1, Mrs O’Brien 2: best single bloom, Mrs Thornley i. Mrs Burton 2. A delicious afternoon lea was served after which an amusing two-act play was given. The principal characters were Mesdames Craighead, Franks, Pitman. Higgins and Bendall. Mrs Thornley was at the trading table and the hostesses were Mesdames Bins, McLean, Mclndoe and Townsend. AT KEREONE Members of the Kereone branch of the Women's Institute spent a pleasant afternoon as the guests of Mrs W. i McLean, Walton, recently. The fune- ’ tion took the form of the monthly j meeting. The hostess demonstrated the cor- j rect way of pruning and planting the various cuttings and beautiful shrubs, creepers and roses, which she dis- , tributed among the guests. The varieties of cuttings included some rare specimens. During the afternoon a presentation was made to Mrs Balemi, who is shortly leaving the district. The ; president spoke in eulogistic terms of ' Mrs Balemi’s work for the institute and expressed the regret of members at her departure. At the conclusion of the afternoon the president, Mrs Davies, on behalf of the institute, thanked Mrs McLean- j The tea hostesses for the day were 1 Mesdames G. Fromm and M. Davies. AT SPRINGDALE There was a very good attendance of members at the May meeting of the i Springdale branch of the Women’s | Institute. The president. Mrs Pal- > liser. occupied the chair. sick room, and Miss Westlake gave a demonstration on smocking. Both were accorded votes of thanks. A new member was welcomed and enrolled. The winners of the competitions were: Savouries, Mrs Burgess 1, Mrs Readhead 2, Mrs Old 3; pickles, Mrs Bridgeman 1, Mrs Old 2, Mrs B. Johansen 3; vase of flowers, Mrs Old 1, Mrs 'Ryan and Mrs Bridgeman (equal), 2; bedsocks, Mrs Bailey 1, Miss Bridgeman 2, Miss Johnstone 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Pitchman, Barnett, Old and Burgess, and an enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the Ode.
