SPECIAL RATE CONSIDERED LARGE INCREASE IN WAGES (By TelecTaDh.—Press Association) PALMERSTON. N\, Friday The Mayor, Mr A. E. Mansford. who is chairman of the Fire Board, stated in an interview that as a result of the increased levies necessary to cover the recent award of the fire brigade employees the City Council ifj considering striking a special rate so that ratepayers will he aware of the actual cost of fire prolection. Commenting on the award, the Mayor added that the Court in some cases actually fixed the wages on a higher basis than those claimed by the employees. After referring to the leave provisions, Mr Mansford said the actual time worked by an employee would lie approximately months per annum. To ensure efficiency it would be necessary to increase the local staff from 12 to 24. In 1935-36 the hoard’s wage hill was £1557. The estimate for this year is £6513.
