GENERAL ELECTION

MAORI CONTESTANTS (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The national executive of the Labour Party has endorsed the candidature of Mr *P. K. Piakea for the Northern Maori seat and Mr Matu Rangi for the Eastern Maori seat. Mr Paikea Is secretary of the Maori Advisory Council. He contested the Northern Maori seat in 1035, but was unsuccessful. Mr Matu Rangi is a farmer and la related to local chieftains in Te Hoe district. The Northern Maori electorate Is at present represented by Mr Tau Henare, and the Eastern Maori electorate by the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata, both of whom are Nationalists.
