DOOTORB IN OHINA RELIEF FUND TOTALS £8530 INCREASED MEDICAL AID (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON. Thursday A cheque from the Mayor of Dunedin, Mr A. H. Allen, for £351 15s Bd, received by the joint council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society, brings the total of the Far East Belief Fund appeal in New Zealand to £8530 8s 3d. A cable received recently from Dr. R. B. Grey, of Hankow, asked for the services of two further doctors and the medical committee selected lire. G. 11. Maaka and T. A. Watson, both oi’ the Napier Hospital staff. They leave by the Awatea on June 24 and will arrive in Hongkong on July 23. There is every likelihood of their joining Drs. Grey and Tremcwan in Honan Province, Central China. A further report from Dr. Gray by air m.%il from Loyang, dated April 28. shows the heavy demands on the medical men. All surgical work is carried out in the - mission hospitals subsidised by the International Red Cross Committee, Hankow. He referred to the wonderful manner in which the different denominations have worked together, Catholics and Protestants, in perfect harmony. War Orphans’ Camp Speaking of operations, he says it is all very uphill work as the cases are of some days’ duration and very septic. He mentions also that a war orphans’ camp is being established in the Catholic Mission at Loyang and they expect it will contain about 500 children aged from a year to 13 or 14. There will be a considerable amount of medical and public health work attached to the camp and be will do it. About 2000 children arc expected to be 5n the camps at \arioua cities aionr the railway routs. A letter from Dr. James Maxwell wig received by cable “The amount of suffering is simply appalling. e\en more within the occupied ?one than it is in the actual fighting line. 1 b_4 said They ore more than grateful for such gifts as are promised in the cable.”
