PRODUCERS’ RETURNS
MINISTER'S STATEMENT COMMENT BY AN EXPORTER (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday Referring to a statement in the Prime Minister's address to farmers ; yesterday that statistics showed that i increases in the values of all farm produce except wool, an exporter said to-day that these increases so far as I the sheep farmer is concerned did not set out the position in the true light for the reason that the price received for lambs under 301 b last, year during January, February and March ranged from 8?d to Od, as against 7|d to 8d this year. Wethers and ewes for export also brought lower prices this season. In arriving at the value of live stock for export by-products such as wool, pelts, and tallow must be taken into account. The published quotations during the last six months for these items are much lower than 12 months ago. The returns for pelts alone for the year ended September 30 last would be £BOO,OOO less than last year. This, plus the drop ill wool and tallow, must be set against the value of meat exported. The return of the farmer for stock sold therefore would be less than last year.
