Copyright) LONDON, May 24 For a theft committed on Saturday, a curate who preached two sermons next day was sentenced on Monday to six weeks’ imprisonment. He ’is the Rev. Benjamin Beckworth, aged 38, curate at Christ Church, Leeds. The charge was that he stole a hat priced at 4s 9d. Tiie stores supervisor said that Beckworth entered the shop on Saturday, took off a black “Trilby” hat and tried on several new ones. He folded up his own hat, placed it in his mackintosh pocket, put on the one he had selected and walked out. When he was stopped, he said: “That's right. Let me pay for it." It was stated that Beckworth had undergone two serious operations. His vicar said that the Bishop of Ripen must decide what action should be taken. He. personally, was willing to retain Beckworth. Parishioners say that the curate was so popular that he was considered as the probable successor to the wear, who is to leave shortly.
