GERMAN TROOPS
withdrawn from frontier ANGLO-FRENCH VIGIL AN CE AVOIDING CATASTROPHE nit**! Press Assn.— Elec. TeL c.opy: ga LONDON, May 24 The German troops have been withdrawn to positions 25 miles from the Czech frontier, according to a message from the Prague correspondent of the News Chronicle and Morning Post. The Paris newspapers emphasise that Britain and France must be vigilant if a European catastrophe is to bo avoided. 1/Oeuvre says: “The general impression is that England has definitely assumed the direction of operations in Central Europe and the Balkans, and in the event of disorders she will side with France and Russia. Herr Hitler must realise that a resolute will opposes his ambitions." Such newspaper headlines as ** Severe Check for Germany ” and and “ Franco-British Diplomatic Triumph ’’ indicate Poland’s reaction to the outcome of the crisis, says the Warsaw correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. The easing of the situation, in which Poland is vitally concerned, is widely attributed to the strong British and French action, which has deeply impressed the nation. Will Always Say “Never” The moderate newspaper Kurjer Warszawski, in an editorial, says: “ Poland will always reply * Never ’ to any manoeuvre for the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia in the inter-
ests of Germany.” Conditions on the frontier of Poland and Czechoslovakia have returned to normal since the receipt of assurances that the Czech military activity was not directed against Poland but merely designed to preserve internal order.
