“NEVER LEFT TAHAROA” UNAUTHORISED REPORTS CRITICISM BY INSPECTOR "It is abundantly evident that th* missing man, Delu lJesai, never left Taharoa, and our job is to find him,” said Inspector C. W. I.opdell, officer m rharge of the Hamilton police disti'irt, commenting to-day on the investigations into the disappearance over a fortnight ago of a Hindu, Delu Desai (42), from the settlement of Taharoa, to miles southward down the coast from Kawhla. Reports concerning the matter are being published without reference to or verification by the police,” added the inspector, ‘ and we cannot vouch for their authenticity. What has happened will only be known when Desai, or his body, is found.” Inspector Lopdell last evening returned from a brief visit to Taharoa, where he left Constables G. Tait and J. Richardson to assist Detectives A. J. W hite and J. Hayes in their search, which will be considerably intensified from now’ on. Communications with the settlement are bad and have hindered lnvestigations, since anyone going there must travel 40 miles round Kawhla Harbour by road and then go by boat across a lake about a mile * wide, thence over a range of hills to the settlement, which is situated on the coast in the middle of sand-dunes. The journey may also be made in part by launch from Kawhia township.
