MATSON LINERS
TO INCLUDE WELLINGGTON ? POSSIBILITY DISCUSSED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Monday Despite the fact that the Wellington • Chamber of Commerce last week reported that there was little prospect .of the Matson Line vessels calling at ! Wellington to and from California and Australia in the very near future, a .different construction is placed on the j published message from Wellington by ;a section of Auckland shipping ; interests. | It is considered that the representations of Mr R. H. .N'immo, accredited emissary of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to the company in San Francisco, have been more favourably received than indicated in the newspaper report. Significance is attached to the statement at the Wellington meeting by Captain Holm suggesting that they could not long continue to leave their front door open. However, the Auckland Harbour Board has not received from the Matson Company any advice that they are not completely satisfied with the Auckand facilities or that a change Is contemplated. ! It is felt that neither Britain nor the United States would react favourably !to extended opposition in the Pacific from Japanese shipping interests, which enjoyed generous building and running subsidies and also low operating costs. Recently Japanese and j German representatives visited New Zealand ostensibly to look over the jports in ihe Dominion.
