BALES MANAGER’S OFFENCE “SPIRIT OF ALCOHOLIC OPTIMISM” (By Telegrapn.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday ‘‘lt was only done in a spirit of alcoholic optimism,” submitted counsel who appeared for Arthur Julius Creedon, sales manager, charged in the Magistrate's Court this morning with assuming the designation of a member of the police force. Detective-Sergeant Holmes said that Creedon was in a hotel on February 11 and struck up an acquaintance with a man named Murfltt, later asking him to come to a party. Murfltt borrowed 6s, from Greedon and on going out of the hotel they were «net by another man with a car. They both entered the car and drove to a petrol station where Creedon purchased a gallon of petrol. They went to a club and Creedon and the other man left Murfltt sitting in the car. When they came out Murfltt was missing and Creedon drove to M-urfltt's home where he told Murfltt's mother he was a police officer and said that if she did not pay 10s as car hire he would be forced to issue a warrant for her son’s arrest. Both Mrs Murfltt and her daughter were under the impression that Creedon was a police officer, j “I will give you a further chance,” said the magistrate, Mr E. C.
